AMCC’s Mission to Mali

From November 1st through the 6th, Professor Pierre Bey, President of Alliance Mondiale Contre le Cancer (AMCC), INCTR’s French Branch, Sabine Perrier-Bonnet, AMCC’s Project Officer, and professional colleagues from France visited Bamako, Mali. The purpose of their visit was to provide training and education for health care professionals in pain management and supportive care for adults and children and to launch the retinoblastoma program for the early diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of children with this cancer. A three-day Pain and Palliative Care Workshop was held on November 3rd through the 5th for local health care professionals. The workshop, supported by the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), was attended by 60 doctors, nurses and pharmacists and was held at the Gabriel Touré Hospital. Dr Laure Copel of the Institut Curie, Paris and Sabine Perrier- Bonnet worked to assist the local health care professionals to establish at regional center for palliative care. On November 4th, again at the Gabriel Touré Hospital, the retinoblastoma program was formally launched in the presence of 40 participants, members of the press and the Director of the Gabriel Touré Hospital, Dr Abdoulaye Néné Couilibali.
