INCTR USA’s Pediatric Oncology Program in Ethiopia

The summer has been a busy time for INCTR USA’s Pediatric Oncology Program in Ethiopia. With the program’s Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship training set to begin this September, the INCTR USA team has been working on a number of preparations to ensure that the fellowship gets off to a great start.

The program has recruited Dr Anu Agrawal, an American trained pediatric oncologist with experience in practicing medicine in Africa, to serve as the program’s Clinical Director and to provide the clinical training component of the program. The INCTR USA team collaborated with its Ethiopian partners to finalize preparations for the renovations of what will become the designated ward for childhood cancer patients at Tikur Anbessa Specialized Hospital (TASH). In July, the program also made progress in its nursing component with the program’s Nursing Director, Julia Challinor and the INCTR USA nursing team visiting TASH to present the Hematology/Oncology Nurse Specialist curriculum and to continue to develop this component of INCTR USA’s Pediatric Oncology Program. The INCTR USA team has also made preparations to send two Ethiopian pharmacists from TASH to Cairo, Egypt to receive four weeks of training in oncology pharmacy.
