Obituary: Dr. Arun P. Kurkure, Surgical Consultant, Breach Candy Hospital, Mumbai, India

Dr. Arun Kurkure was a well known and highly respected surgeon in Mumbai, India, where he had practiced for over 30 years at Breach Candy Hospital. Sadly, he passed away on July 14th, 2012 after a two year struggle with colon cancer and is survived by his wife, Purna, and daughter, Durva, as well as his mother, brother and sisters. As a gynaecological oncologist and breast cancer surgeon, Dr. Kurkure not only provided excellent care for his patients but made special efforts to ensure that the poorer members of the community also had access to the treatment they needed. He continued to see patients up to his final day, typically putting his patients’ needs before his own. In addition to his work as a surgeon, Dr. Kurkure was, for the last 10 years, the secretary-general and managing trustee of the Indian Cancer Society (ICS), and it was largely through his reshaping of the society’s management that it was able to considerably expand its activities in the last few years. Ranging from early detection to rehabilitation, the society’s programs served up to 10,000 patients and family members a year. He headed the cancer registry of the ICS, and was a member of the National Task Force for Formulation of a strategy for Cancer Control, as well as the Technical Resources Group. In this capacity, he participated in many projects related to the prevention and early detection of cancer in India. He was well known internationally through his work on WHO committees and the UICC Board of Directors. Dr. Kurkure was a gentle but determined man who worked tirelessly on behalf of his beloved patients, both directly, in his surgical practice, and indirectly through his work in cancer control. He will be sorely missed.
