Seminar on Pediatric Oncology in Tanzania, October 5 2010, Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital Crumlin, Dublin

Ocean Road Children’s Pediatric Oncology Ward in Dar es Salaam treats approximately 350 new cases of childhood cancer annually, free of charge for families. Short term survival rates have risen from 12% in 2005 to 60% in 2009. Part of this was made possible thanks to the numerous donators who raised funds for INCTR and Children in Crossfire in order to assist the physicians and to support the children in the ward.

The evening was introduced by Prof Martin Corbally - consultant paediatric surgeon who has worked in many outreach surgical teachin programmes most recently in Vietnam and Tanzania. The two organizations were represented by their executive directors, Dr Ian Magrath, Mr Richard Moore.

Dr. Patricia Scanlan, INCTR Program Coordinator, presented the plans for the future of the institution, which is expected to become a leading Centre of Excellence for Pediatric Oncology in Sub Saharan Africa. The seminar was followed by a cheese and wine reception where several attendees offered financial or in kind assistance help these plans become reality.
