Sidnei Epelman Represents INCTR at ASCO, June 2011

Dr. Sidnei Epelman, President of INCTR Brazil, attended the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) that was held in Chicago in June, 2011. This report summarizes the meetings of various groups held during the course of the ASCO meeting that Dr. Epelman attended in which he represented INCTR.

On June 4th, he attended a meeting convened by the Harvard Global Equity Initiative, the Global Task Force on Expanded Access to Cancer Care and Control in Developing Countries (GTF.CCC) and participated in an interactive discussion on global cancer initiatives.

On June 6th, he attended a meeting of the Cancer Treatment Working Group (CanTreat). He was invited to present INCTR’s on-going projects to build centers of excellence in the delivery of pediatric cancer care in Tanzania and Ethiopia. An update on the United Nations (UN) High-Level Summit on Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) which will take place in September was also discussed during the CanTreat meeting.

Also on June 6th, he attended a meeting of ASCO’s International Affairs Committee. Suggestions and new programs in development to be presented at the UN High-Level Summit on NCDs in September were reviewed by the attendees. Dr. Epelman has been invited to be a member of this committee for the next three years.
