INCTR’s 10th Anniversary Meeting

INCTR’s central offices have been located in Brussels since April, 2000. To celebrate 10 years of operations in Belgium, an extended Annual General Assembly was held on the 26th and 27th of March to assess accomplishments in this decade of activities and to develop strategies for continuing and expanding INCTR’s work.

Nepalese Association of Palliative Care (NAPCare)

Various individuals and organizations have been providing palliative care in Nepal through several programs for a long time. Bir Hospital, a Nepalese government hospital, started an oncology unit in 1991. In 2000, Hospice Nepal was started. The Nepalese Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (NNCTR), a branch of INCTR, started in 2002 and includes palliative care as part of its activities. B.P. Koirala Memorial Cancer Hospital, a government funded cancer hospital, opened a hospice and palliative care wing in 2004. Thankot Hospice Center, the only 100% charity hospice in Nepal, was established in 2007 with the help of Korean friends. Bhaktapur Cancer Hospital, which opened in 1998, has provided palliative care services in close cooperation with NNCTR and INCTR since 2002. The hospital has a 12 bed palliative care ward serviced by a dedicated palliative care team. In 2006, it started a twinning project with Nanaimo Hospice, in Canada.

BHGI-INCTR Breast Cancer Control Library

The Breast Health Global Initiative (BHGI) and the International Network for Cancer Treatment and Research (INCTR) have collaborated to create a unique on-line breast cancer literature library. The BHGI-INCTR Breast Cancer Control Library includes a searchable catalogue listing nearly 6,000 published references relevant to breast health care and cancer control in LMCs.

A Regional Event for a Global Challenge

The Alliance Mondiale Contre le Cancer (AMCC)1 held its third meeting on cancer control in French-speaking developing countries on the 8th and 9th of April in Epidaure at the Val d’Aurelle Regional Cancer Center located in Montpellier (France). Ninety-five participants representing several institutions2 and organizations from industrialized countries3 as well as doctors and other health professionals from 11 French-speaking developing countries in Africa and Asia attended the meeting.

NNCTR/INCTR Nepal New Office

At the beginning of March 2010, NNCTR/INCTR Nepal moved its offices to a newly constructed building. The address is: Ghokechaur Banepa 1. NEPAL (Phone/Fax: 977-11-664524). This new building will serve as a centre where cervical cancer screening and referrals for the necessary follow up tests and treatment for detected non-malignant abnormalities will be provided. The centre will have a clinic for the administration of the HPV vaccine. Clinical breast cancer screening will also be offered. General information about cancer will be available to the public. In addition, the centre will offer training of personnel for the organization of cervical and breast cancer screening programs. It is hoped that a community-based palliative care program will be established in the near future.

AMCC’s New Board of Directors

L'Alliance Mondiale Contre le Cancer (AMCC), INCTR's French Branch, held elections for the officers of its Board of Directors on April 7th, 2010 in Montpellier. Prof. Pierre Bey, a radiation oncologist, who was the former Director of the Medical Section of the Institut Curie in Paris, was elected President. Prof. Bey has succeeded AMCC’s first President, Prof. Guy de Thé. Prof de Thé will now serve as the Honorary President of AMCC.

Visit to Africa by INCTR Pathologists

INCTR, with the support of the NCI Office of HIV and AIDS Malignancies, is working to establish improved pathological diagnosis in the context of its study on the treatment of HIV+ and HIV- Burkitt lymphoma in equatorial Africa. The goal is to achieve central pathology review in the context of the treatment study and to improve pathology services in participating countries.

INCTR 2010 Annual General Assembly/10th Anniversary

The INCTR 2010 annual meeting will be held on the 10th anniversary of the opening of the INCTR’s Brussels office, which is the headquarters of the organization, and will include presentations relating to INCTR’s ongoing projects as well as a number of discussions concerning global cancer control and INCTR’s immediate and longer term strategic initiatives. Ongoing projects in Asia, Latin America and Africa are designed to identify important problems that have a negative impact on patient care, or to immediately improve patients services while providing “on-the-job” training and building a foundation of evidence on which to base future progress. Meeting participants will include representatives of the World Health Organization and the Program of Action against Cancer of the International Atomic Energy Agency, with which INCTR has strong links. Of course, representatives from our offices and branches (France, U.K., USA, Nepal, India, Brazil, Egypt, Tanzania and Cameroon) will also be present. We also plan to invite a small number of guests to assist us in our deliberations.

PSPO

In July 2005, INCTR sponsored the First International Conference on Pediatric Oncology in Karachi, Pakistan. It was during this meeting, which was well attended by pediatric oncologists from Pakistan and abroad, that the need to form a national pediatric oncology society was recognized, and the Pakistan Society of Pediatric Oncology (PSPO) established. In November 2009, PSPO was officially registered as a fully functional entity. Dr Shamvil Ashraf, an active member of the INCTR Pediatric Oncology Strategy Group will be the first president of the Society. PSPO goals include the establishment of a cooperative study group, a national childhood cancer registry and a training program in pediatric oncology.

OERC website open and soliciting educational contributions use of www.oerc.merlot materials

The INCTR and MERLOT have partnered to create the Open Education Resources for Members (OERC) portal. OERC strongly encourages all INCTR members and friends to initiate their contributions of cancer educational materials to this website. At the same time, we actively invite all potential users to explore the site and begin to utilize and comment upon the cancer education modules posted there.

MERLOT Voices on the website provides an excellent opportunity for “live chats” or threaded discussions of issues of current interest, such the breaking news and controversy regarding breast cancer screening recommendations in the USA.

OERC is interested in initiating an online discussion of problems and practices related to the risks and benefits of breast cancer screening method in developing countries.
