Training in Pediatric Oncology

The Tata Memorial Centre (TMC) in Mumbai, India, one of INCTR’s collaborating institutions, provided training in pediatric oncology to Dr. Olufemi Adefehinti , a pediatrician from Nigeria. His fellowship training was sponsored by the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile-Ife, Nigeria - another INCTR partner institution. Dr Adefehinti’s training was supervised by Dr Shripad Banavali, Head of the Medical Oncology Department and Dr Purna Kurkure, Head of Pediatric Oncology at TMC. The training was delivered over a one year period. During the first 6 months, the management of pediatric solid tumors and lymphoid malignancies were emphasized. In the second part of the training, Dr Adefehinti had received training in hematopathology, bone marrow transplantation, pediatric pain and palliative care, radiotherapy, cancer survivor clinics, and benign pediatric hematology. This was a valuable experience and demonstrates the cooperation among INCTR partner institutions in helping to develop capacity for the delivery of cancer care.
