Unnecessary Suffering: Lack of Palliative Care in India

At the 18th International AIDS Conference held in Vienna in July 2010, INCTR, along with Human Rights Watch, St. John's Medical College and Hospital and the Hyderabad Pain Relief and Palliative Care Society, presented a poster entitled “Unnecessary Suffering: Lack of Palliative Care in India.” The poster highlighted the lack of palliative care for people living with HIV in India and recommended that palliative care be integrated into national HIV services, AIDS doctors receive appropriate training, and that drugs such as oral morphine be made available at AIDS clinics. The poster was one of a growing number of palliative care presentations at the conference that, for the first time, included a plenary address on the issue.
