From January 2nd -17th, 2012, a team of four nurses travelled to Addis Ababa to continue with the training program for nurses caring for cancer patients at the Tikur Anbessa Hospital. Oncology nurse training is an essential component of INCTR USA’s Pediatric Oncology Program in Ethiopia.

The focus area for this trip was patient and family education and continued skill and knowledge building about chemotherapy preparation and administration. During the first week, Meron Legesse worked with nurses caring for adolescent and adult patients in the oncology unit while Cecelia Rose English and Julia Challinor worked with the nurses on both pediatric units. A luncheon was held for all hematology/oncology nurses to inspire cohesion as a nursing specialty group (see photo). In the second week, Linda Abramowitz joined Julia Challinor to continue working with the local nurses. One highlight was a workshop, led by Linda on calculating chemotherapy doses and reviewing local chemotherapy protocols. The team are looking forward to their return visit to Ethiopia in April 2012.
