Updating the “Pink Book”

On 23-27th April, a meeting took place at WHO, Geneva, to continue with the process of updating the popular WHO Guideline “Comprehensive cervical cancer control: a guide to essential practice” which is often referred to as the “Pink Book.” Dr. Magrath participated in this consultation on behalf of INCTR in the revision of the chapters concerning the treatment of invasive cancer, palliative care, and screening for and treating pre-cancerous lesions. Since the first version was published in 2006, much more information relevant to the control of cervical cancer has become available, hence the need for the update.

Additional information that will be incorporated into the final up-dated version will include the use of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) vaccination in the prevention of cervical cancer, the use of testing for HPV in cervical secretions in order to identify patients at high risk for cervical cancer, optimal and acceptable methods for the so-called “see-and-treat” approach to screening, in which treatment is given without performing, or awaiting the results of a biopsy, and the use of chemotherapy in treatment. The meeting was attended by approximately __ people, and revisions have now largely been completed.
